Why I never…

I just realized that I never told you about the weekend beauty-fest.  I’m sorry!

Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to talk to mothers and daughters on “Beauty in Christ”.  The topic was based on the rough outlines from popular reality shows like What Not to Wear and The Biggest Loser:

  1. Point out the obvious -  help people become aware of their situation
  2. Teach the truth
  3. Set people free to try on the truth in their own size

When you look in the mirror, what do you see?  Do you see wrinkles, gray hair, sad saggy eyes, unfulfilled dreams, lack of direction?  It’s hard in the reality of the world’s focus on beauty to see truth.

Mulan had this problem too.  She tried, but she couldn’t quite get her life right.  This song Reflection sums up her feelings.

I’m not fond of my reflection, but I need to find comfort in the truth.  The truth can be found in our Creator.  Here are some words the Creator uses to describe you:

  • You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
  • I sculpted you from nothing to something.
  • I wove you and shaped you from the inside out.
  • Your body and soul is beautiful.
  • I know you and see you.
  • I knit your days together plus those days before and after you.

How do the Creator’s words match up to your reflection words?  Probably not quite the same.  What’s the difference and how can we gain His insights?

Spend a few minutes, hours, days, weeks studying this passage - Psalm 139.  This psalm holds precious truths about you and your Creator.  Who knows you better other than the one who made you?

Have you read the quick article called Garage Sale Grace yet?  Go ahead, it’ll just take a second.  (The article is found on the front page of the document and written by my hubby.)

That famous painting, Ripening Pears, was very valuable from its inception.  Yet it got caught between owners, placed in places where it wasn’t appreciated and lost its apparent value.  But bring that painting into a community where it has a home and suddenly its worth $1 million dollars.

That’s you friend!  Get yourself out of the dumpster and sit in the presence of your Creator.  It’s your secret beauty routine.  Daily reading and quiet moments in the arms of the One who gave you life will boost your reflection closer toward the real truth.

Try that truth on for size and see how it fits.

Do I look good in this?

“Do I look good in this?”

How many times have you uttered those words before leaving the house?

The fashion and beauty industry is huge!  In fact, it’s almost recession proof.  It’s a well known fact that a woman will splurge on cosmetics (even if she doesn’t have any money) just to make herself feel good.  It’s true!

Think about the popular TV shows today.  Shows like “The Biggest Loser”.  Yes, it’s a great show – I love it.  But after watching it one night with my 8 yr old, she looked at herself in the mirror and asked, “Do you think I need to lose weight Mom?”  YIKES!

Then there’s “American Idol”, “What Not to Wear” and “America’s Next Top Model”, just to name a few.  It’s all about who’s best, who’s prettiest and who’s following all the right rules.  Personally, I may enjoy the shows, but what values are being planted in my heart?

Thankfully God doesn’t play by our rules.  Our God fashioned us in His perfect image.  This holy Creator completely adores us the way we are, even though we don’t always live up to His image.  Yet, God delights in you.  When you find yourself in not so pretty situations, God still loves you unconditionally.  In fact, He says in Isaiah 61 that He will

bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair

I’m excited to share my thoughts on beauty in Christ to a Mom and Daughter group this weekend.  Wanna help?  When you think about these two countering views of beauty what images come to mind?  Do you think about certain public personas, Barbie, or TV shows?  Then, what has God laid on your heart about His true perfect image fashioned in you?

Thanks for helping!  Happy Friday!

mulan1Have you ever seen the movie Mulan?  Mulan is a brillant and beautiful girl, but is often a little clutsy and never quite does the right thing.  In the beginning of the movie her family is primping her to be married.  But Mulan blows her interview with the marriage facilitator and disappoints herself and her family.  Shortly after she sings this song…

Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
Or a perfect daughter
Can it be
I’m not meant to play this part?
Now I see
That if I were truly to be myself
I would break my family’s heart

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone
I don’t know?
Somehow I cannot hide
Who I am though I’ve tried
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

This song is my oldest daughter’s favorite song of all Disney movies.  She sings it all the time.  I’m sure she doesn’t understand the impact of the lyrics.  However, when I heard her singing these lyrics tonight in light of yesterday’s post (the beauty of Christ) it hurt my soul.  What do you think?

The beauty of Christ

Isaiah 60:19 (Amplified Bible)
The sun shall no more be your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you,
but the Lord shall be to you an everlasting light,
and your God your glory and your beauty.

Psalm 23:6 (The Message)
Your beauty and love chase after me
every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God
for the rest of my life.

Psalm 45:11 (NIV)
The king is enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.

I’m beginning my research for a new “on the edge” encounter with Christ.  This next speaking engagement is just a week away.  It is a multi-generational event for moms and daughters focused on beauty in Christ.  What would you want to hear if you went to such event?

(today’s the last day for entering the giveaway!)
