What’s your prescription for the day?

Friday is the day!  Darlene will be here answering your questions PLUS a giveaway!  Don’t miss it!

I had a doctor’s appointment today

UGH.  I tried to cancel.

Cancelling would cost $190.

So, I went.

Afterwards, I paid $190!

I’ve been feeling a little blue lately.  Not bad enough for an intervention.  But, just enough to know that my depression isn’t “under control.”

That’s why I didn’t want to see my doctor today.

Once I got done sharing my month load of drama, he asked me three questions:

  1. Have you been exercising?
  2. Are you taking your vitamins?
  3. Have you been out in the sun?

My answer to all three questions were, “NO!”  Didn’t you hear me?  I don’t feel good, I can’t do those things!

I waited for him to write me a prescription to feel better.

But, do you know what he did?  He told me to do three things:

  1. You need to exercise every day.
  2. Take your vitamins.
  3. Get out in the sun, or go tanning (vitamin D).

What?  I didn’t want homework!  I wanted the drive-through prescription!

He told me, stop settling for mediocre.

Ouch!  That comment hit me between the eyes.  That’s exactly how I’ve been living.  It’s so much easier to say to myself, I have depression, therefore, I have to sit here and mope all day.

After going to the True Woman Conference this past weekend, I was reminded that women sometimes live mediocre lives.  We allow the world to tell us how to live, instead of doing the God-homework to find out how He wants us to live.  It’s sometimes easier to follow the trends of the world, rather than counter the world with the truth of God’s Word.

Here are three pieces of homework that I KNOW I need to do in order to thrive, instead of survive, and not settle for mediocre living.

  1. Get into God’s Word every day.
  2. Be “current”* with my husband.
  3. Set the table** and open conversation over dinner with my girls.

There are many other disciplines that I need to work on.  But I’ll start there today.

What’s your prescription for the day?

* Getting “current” with my husband is from an incredible book on marriage (non-Christian, but very appropriate) The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

** “Setting the table” comes from a workshop that I attended at True Woman with Devi Titus and her book The Home Experience

Shane, you’re in my heart, my thoughts, and my prayers.

    Love in Him,

I happened to try one of those 5 hr energy “sips”. I was amazed at how good I felt and that I really did have a quick energy fix. Then I realized it was mostly vitamins. Started taking a multivitamin, some Vitamin B and some iron. Can’t believe how my mood and energy have lifted. Plus if I’d go to bed and not stay up blogging… hmmm, that might help some too

Oh, I know that voice. I struggle with depression too. Medication has done wonders for me (thank you, Lord), but exercise and good rest really make a difference too.

Wanna know what works the very best though? Worship. Strange, maybe. Then again, maybe not. I turn up the praise music, sit on the kitchen floor with a box of tissues, and sing and pray and cry my heart out! I can’t do it as often as I’d like because I don’t want to scare my little ones, but when I do…it almost feels like I don’t have to go outside for some sunshine – the SON-shine does the trick right down to my soul.

    Peace, sister.

    1. Being on my face before him everyday.
    2. Reading his Word everyday (even when I don’t feel it’s doing a blessed thing…it is. It’s his promise to us.)
    3. Confession of the soul outloud and with my husband as needed.
    4. Looking in the mirror and seeing him in me…not the pitiful flesh looking back.
    5. Believing that there is coming a day…

Love u and praying for u.

    Very true statements here.

    My prescription for the day?
Stay in His fellowship. Read his word and converse (not just pray) with God daily, even when I don’t have “time”

Be present in my home, with my kids and hubby.

    Make time for rest.

I have dealt with depression too. I am finally doing better. But I would not be at this point with out lexapro. And lots of reading. I blog to help me find that I do have happiness in my day. I have and do pray for help to get through my life. I am so glad you have found peace also.
    Be blessed my friend.

Thanks for the timely reminders. Amazing how simple it really is to keep ourselves feeling well, and how often we neglect these simple things.

Hi Girlfriend. It’s quite the journey, no? I WILL say, it’s helpful to know I’m not alone with this journey…He is there, and he gives me friends like you. Peace, Carol

    4. exercise

Your words are very powerful today! Thanks for sharing a prescription that is needed by EVERYONE to feel better. Remember you are a child of God and He loves you.

    Blessings, Whitney

Thanks for this reminder. I struggle with depression too. AND your prescriptions are my prescriptions. Such simple things to do yet when one is feeling blue, at least in my case, there seems to be this little girl inside me stamping her foot and saying, “But I don’t feel like doing those things!”

Nevertheless, time with God and exercise, sunshine (as well as Son-shine) and vitamins! Okay, I’m off to take my vitamin.

Thanks for sharing this!! I really needed to read this and put it into action. Hope you start feeling better soon and maybe I will to after putting some of the suggestions into action.

Thanks for sharing this. The only thing I add to this prescription when I’m feeling down is to write down as many things as I can think of that produce feelings of gratitude and thankfulness.

  15. 15 Cassandra October 16, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Awesome thoughts. I do none of those three things either and its no wonder fall and winter are the worst seasons for me too.

  16. 16 KelliGirl October 16, 2008 at 6:53 pm

    Shane,
Thanks for sharing. I do find that when I feel down on myself it can often become a vicious circle where I further withdraw only to feel worse about myself. Getting out to take the dog for a brisk walk or better yet an intense workout at the gym does wonders for changing my attitude.

Chatting with a friend over a latte at Starbucks is another pick-me-up.

    Blessings,
    Kelli
