Surprise! Plus an Interview and a GIVEAWAY!

Take a look around!  Do you like the design?  If so, what do you like?  Would you change anything?

I’ve been having a ball working with a great designer named Judi at DoodleBug Designs!  Judi has a surprise for YOU too!  She is giving away a FREE premade template for your own blog!  For those of you who do not have a blog, I have a special giveaway just for you!  Read on!

Today’s Works for Me Wednesday is all about Judi, blog designs, and moms working from home.

I asked Judi, What works for you as a designer?

[Judi] I find that having lots of information works well for me- whether it’s educational information or customer information.  The more I have, the better equipped I am to provide a fabulous design for each client.  I stay organized which helps keep everything going smoothly and quickly.  I have very detailed and ordered folders on my computer.

I asked Judi, What was hard for you to learn in blog design?

[Judi] A lot of people would say the coding would be the most difficult – but not for me! The hardest thing  was learning the graphics program and all you can do with it. I look back at some of the designs I first did and think “man was that plain or what”. I just had to learn all the tricks and fun things you can do with the program to spiff up designs.

Can you teach us some of those tricks?

[Judi] Sure, but I don’t know if I should give away my secrets or I may be out of business! There is a wealth of information on the internet about blog template design. You can Google it and get just about anything you could ever want or need. That is how I got started. I also learned a lot by playing around with my own template code. Once you see how it works it really isn’t extremely difficult, depending on what you want in a design. And, of course, you can always contact me and I will help you as much as possible!

I asked Judi, What works for you as a work at home mom?

[Judi] I try to restrict myself to working when the kids are in bed for the evening.  I also can get some things done during nap time now that my oldest is back at school. I tend to be somewhat of a “work-aholic” so I really have to monitor myself!  I can get my household stuff done, errands run, bills paid, etc. during the day.  I find that the family does better when we stick to a routine.  So everyone pretty much knows that at 9:00 pm I will be upstairs in the office working.  I keep them informed of how many orders I have and the status of each.  It really helps that they are interested in what I am doing. I also try to take a day off on the weekend, usually Sunday.  Recently I have tried to set a cut off time to go to bed because I have been known to be up until 3:00am working on designs. Yikes!

I read on your website that you had a premature baby, can you tell us about that?

My baby boy was born 1-9-06 at 26 weeks gestation (3-1/2 months premature). He is a miracle from God. He was in the NICU for 3 months. We saw him quit breathing too many times but thank God he is a perfect little boy now.

Thank you Judi for your great design, for sharing with us, and for the giveaway!

To enter the giveaway, leave your name and what you like best on this Heart Reflections design.  If you have any tips yourself, please share!

For those of you not needing a blog design, I have a special Bible just for you (which goes along with yesterday’s post).  It is The Message translation of the New Testament in a fun jean designed cover.

The winner will posted on Monday, September 22, 2008.

I love your blog design. For lack of a better word, the “curlies” are what got me. They are so girly, yet elegant. Love the colors too, are they lavender and plum? The lake picture is just gorgeous!

  4. 4 Shane September 17, 2008 at 1:05 am

Thanks Joanna! The lake picture is from a spiritual retreat that I went on this summer. You read about it here: http://heartreflections.wordpress.com/2008/07/19/push-the-reset-button/

I have a blog that I’d like to re-design, and I love this black/white/gray design!

  6. 6 Joy September 17, 2008 at 6:00 am

Lovely new design. I love how the picture so perfectly “reflects” your blog name. It’s very peaceful and beautiful.

Please don’t enter me in either of your giveaways, I just wanted to comment on your design.

    Have a great day!

Thanks!! If you design for wordpress blogs, count me in!! I love the understated colors and swirls on here. Elegant and simple!

  8. 8 MamaMay September 17, 2008 at 8:34 am

Wow! Those are some REALLY pretty blogs. Each one is very unique. I like they you don’t seem to be using a cookie cutter on any of your designs and are able to tailor fit them so well!

  9. 9 Candace September 17, 2008 at 10:05 am

I love your blog. It looks wonderful. I would love some help with mine!

I absolutely LOVE the background with the grey swirls on black! Thanks for running this giveaway! :)

  11. 11 Steph September 17, 2008 at 11:33 am

Love the palette. Mostly black and white doesn’t seem like it’d work, but it does. You managed to make it warm. Impressive. :)

  12. 12 Kathryn September 17, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Shane, I love your new design! And, I love the photograph, too. (You don’t have to enter me in your giveaway, although I loved winning the last one! :-) Just finished 3:16 last night … including the 40-day devotions. Just couldn’t stop myself!)

  13. 13 elaine September 17, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Peaceful and lovely. No need to enter me. Judi helped me work on a few things not long ago; I know she will do a good job for the winner. As Joy said, this is a peaceful background and picture for your readers.

    Looks good…

Hi there! I popped over for Works for me Weds and I like alot of things about your blog. The photo is fabulous. Your text is easy to read. So many choose colors that look pretty but are hard on the eyes. It’s welcoming without being too cutesy. I really need a blog makeover and honestly, Judi’s work is the first I’e thought- this could be the person to help me. Pick me!

  15. 15 judi September 17, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Wow! Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments. This is exciting! I would love to help any and all of you with your blogs! As MamaMay said I really try hard not to do “cookie cutter” designs like so many other designers do. I work hard to give each customer what they envision for their design. I communicate a lot with each client and really work to use the ideas and elements they love! I love doing it and again, I appreciate all your kind words!

  16. 16 terri tiffany September 18, 2008 at 7:15 am

I love the sides! I have always wondered about the mystery of getting a great looking blog! Terrific!

  17. 17 beth September 18, 2008 at 3:47 pm

SO I love the curlies too! Way fun! I think I would love help spicing up my blog. Being the mom of 2 boys with a husband who works in athletics I am surrounded by “100% BOYNESS” all the time. I don’t want to go too girlie..but I need some help. I’m a Sinner saved by Grace first and foremost. I am the wife of my VERY BEST FRIEND. and MOM to 2 of the sweetest boys ever. I work at a church and think that the LORD is preparing me to be the mom of teenagers one day! :”)

  18. 18 Carolyn September 18, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Wow, the whole design is so peaceful and tranquil. I love the photograhp; I want to crawl into my monitor and sit for a while. The design is appealing, but not overwhelming; so I feel drawn to linger. The curlies add visual interest, but do not detract from the page, or distract me. I’ve been looking at lots of blogs to get ideas, and I feel like Goldilocks–some are just too busy, some are just too plain and boring. But this one is just perfect! It is elegantly simple, the perfect flavor that I would love my blog (which I’m trying to get off the ground) to have. So, please enter my name, and thanks for the opportunity as well as the delightful interlude.

I would love to win a blog design! I want to turn my barely-there old blog into one about something I absolutely love, which is down home country cooking! This would be perfect!

  20. 20 Shelley September 21, 2008 at 12:22 am

I love the picture at the top of your blog and the swirls. I love the design overall!

  21. 21 Shelly September 21, 2008 at 10:14 am

Your design is so peaceful and I love anything to do with nature! Thanks for the giveaway.

  22. 22 C Duran September 21, 2008 at 10:59 am

I like that it looks simple and sophisticated.

  23. 23 Sarah at themommylogues September 21, 2008 at 1:48 pm

I really have a thing for black backgrounds, and I love that this is more of a charcoal, with the swirls. I like how it sort of gives it a texture. Very nice! I’d love to have a new design!

  24. 24 SaraJane September 21, 2008 at 2:38 pm

    Love the purpley swirls!

  25. 25 karen c. September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

I love the simple beauty of the design. It’s something you could keep forever. I’m constantly changing our blog background because I get so bored with the way it looks.

  26. 26 Erinn(in MD) September 21, 2008 at 5:33 pm

I could use some help desperately! This design is gorgeous! No overwhelming colors or patterns like some I have seen. The photo is serene – somewhere I wish I was right now!
    Thanks!
    Erinn

I would be SO happy to win this prize and get a look for my site. Definitely not something we have the money for right now, but something I’ve been wanting to do.

Thanks for the opportunity to make a try for it!

I would love for a designer to give my blog a makeover. I love what she did here for you. The only thing I would change is having 2 sidebars instead of one. She does a great job!
Thanks for the chance to win! God bless!

  31. 31 Jenn September 22, 2008 at 8:21 am
